1. Age Divisions & Category Specifications

Lumina Arts offers competitive sections for Troupes and Groups in the following age brackets and genres.

Age Groups

  • 8 & Under (8/U)
  • 10 & Under (10/U)
  • 12 & Under (12/U)
  • 14 & Under (14/U)
  • 16 & Under (16/U)
  • Open Age


Dance Categories & Definitions

  • Jazz: A high-energy routine utilizing jazz technique, including isolations, leaps, and turns. (Commercial or Broadway styles).
  • Classical Ballet: Routines must show traditional ballet technique. Performance must be in ballet shoes or demi-pointes.
  • Lyrical: A style of dance that interprets the lyrics or mood of the music through fluid and expressive movement.
  • Contemporary: A routine focusing on modern awareness, floor work, and abstract movement. May include "Traditional" or "Commercial" contemporary styles.
  • Hip Hop: High-intensity street-style dance incorporating current trends (popping, locking, breaking, or commercial hip hop).
  • Tap: A routine using tap technique and performed with tap shoes. Can include slow, fast, or waltz tap rhythms.


2. General Rules & Conditions of Entry

  • Amateur Status: Lumina Arts is open to amateur dancers only. Performers must not derive their primary income from professional dance performance.
  • Studio Entries: All entries must be submitted under a Dance School name.
  • Minimum Numbers: A "Group" or "Troupe" must consist of at least five (5) performers.
  • Age Determination: Age is determined as of 1st January of the competition year.
  • The Two-Year Rule: To accommodate studio growth, a troupe may include up to two (2) dancers who are no more than two years older than the age group entered (e.g., a 12/U group may have two 13 or 14-year-olds).


3. Music, Timing & Media

  • Music Submission: All music must be uploaded in advance to the designated Lumina Arts digital platform (Music Uploads) no later than 14 days before the event. No CDs or USBs will be accepted at the sound desk. 
  • Time Limits: Troupe/Group routines are limited to a maximum of 4 minutes. Over-time routines may be subject to a point deduction.
  • Photography & Video: Strictly no personal filming or photography is allowed inside the auditorium. Professional media will be available for purchase. Use of mobile phones to record performances may result in the disqualification of the entire studio.


4. Performance & Backstage

  • Props: All props must be set and removed by studio representatives. Total setup and strike time must not exceed 2 minutes. Props must not leave any debris on stage (e.g., glitter, water, or petals).
  • Teacher Access: A maximum of two (2) teachers per studio are permitted backstage at any one time to assist with troupe management.
  • Modesty & Costuming: To maintain a family-friendly environment, all costumes and choreography must be age-appropriate. If a costume has a high-cut leg line, dancers must wear tights/hosiery. Any choreography that is deemed not age-appropriate will result in a deduction of points at the adjudicator's discretion.


5. Adjudication & Awards

  • Adjudicator’s Decision: The decision of the adjudicator is final. Under no circumstances should teachers, parents, or dancers approach the adjudicator.
  • Conflict of Interest: A student or teacher must not have been taught by the adjudicator within 6 months of the competition date.
  • Awards: Places will be awarded (1st, 2nd, 3rd) based on scoring. Highly Commended and Lumina Arts Awards may also be granted at the adjudicator’s discretion.

6. Refunds & Event Changes

  • Refund Policy: Lumina Arts does not offer refunds for change of mind or withdrawal. Credit notes for future events may be considered in the case of a medical emergency (medical certificate required).
  • Program Adjustments: The committee reserves the right to combine age groups or categories if there are insufficient entries to form a section.

All competitors perform at their own risk. Lumina Arts and the venue staff take no responsibility for any injuries, accidents, or loss of property sustained during the event. By entering, the Studio Principal acknowledges and accepts these terms on behalf of their dancers and families.
